While investigating the current situation of the middle- and small-sized enterprise in developing countries, the research project aims to analyze the problems those enterprises have and clarify the ways in which Japan could help develop the industries in developing countries and at the same time foster the middle- and small-sized enterprises. \"The Research on Middle- and Small-sized Enterprises\" has been conducted since 1984, however, the countries included in the survey has been limited to those countries in the Asian market economy. The 1988 survey, which was the fifth survey, looked into the middle- and small-sized enterprises in China, a country under socialistic planned economy system, for the first time. This 1990 survey followed the style of 1988 survey. Since most of the enterprises included in the survey are national enterprises, China's partnership in this joint research was essential. Many restrictions were placed upon analyzing the
