There are no other examples in Japan of island residents having to part with their beloved hometown because of a disaster and to live in evacuation facilities for as long.\n\nThis survey is the fourth (2008) in a series of surveys conducted using the same method in April each year from 2005, when the evacuation order covering all of Miyake-jima was lifted, to 2008, with the aim of comprehensive longitudinal research into how residents achieve recovery after experiencing off-island evacuation for as long as 4 and a half years.\n\nFurther aims are to provide the survey results to disaster prevention institutions and others as the basic materials to understand the ongoing recovery of Miyake Village and to prevent public interest from fading by sharing the current state of the island with the society.\n\nThe report summarizes the first to fourth surveys and discusses in concrete detail the realities of and progress in recovery.
