(Report on Archaeological Excavations for the Designation andPreservation of the Hioki City Historic Site) This report summarizes the results of archaeological investigations conducted at the Ichiki-Tsurumaru Castle site in 2004 and 2024. The castle is believed to have been constructed by the Ichiki clan, who served as district governors of Ichiki. The castle remained their ancestral residence for generations until 1462, when the clan was expelled by the Shimadzu (Shimazu) clan, the Shugo (provincial constables) of Satsuma, Ōsumi and Hyūga Provinces, after which the site came under direct control of Shimadzu. During the Sengoku period, the castle was controlled by the Sasshū-Shimadzu family, a branch of the main Shimadzu clan. In 1539, due to internal conflict within the clan, it was captured by Shimadzu Takahisa of the Sōshū-Shimadzu family, another branch of the main Shimadzu family. Eventually, the castle was abandoned in 1615 following the Tokugawa Shogunate’s “One Castle per Province” order. According to “The History of Japan (Historia de Japam)” by Luís Fróis, the castle was visited by the Jesuit missionaries Francis Xavier and Luís de Almeida. The excavations at the site confirmed the presence of foundation stones, indicating that at least two buildings once stood there. Such stone-foundation structures are extremely rare among medieval castles in southern Kyushu. In addition, the fortification methods of earthen ramparts were identified. Recovered artifacts include domestic ceramics, such as Satsuma ware and Japanese ceramics, dating from the medieval to early modern periods; imported Chinese porcelains from the Jingdezhen and Zhangzhou kilns of the 15-16th centuries; stone tobacco pipe components; and square-headed nails. These materials provide valuable insights into architectural practices, daily life within the castle, and both domestic and international long-distance exchange networks associated with medieval castles in southern Kyushu. |
