What previously seemed to be the natural life course of graduating from school, immediately starting work, getting married, and having children is no longer so clear, and discussions have started concerning steps society can take if such changes become the norm.\n\nIn light of this, the “Young people’s life and networks” study group of the Institute for Research on Household Economics study group (Chief Examiner: Shinji Nozawa) initiated the “Survey on Young People\u0027s Future” in 2001. This project involved a questionnaire survey of approximately 700 unmarried men and women aged 25 to 34 years living in Tokyo and attempted to obtain a multifaceted/comprehensive view of the realities of their lives and their life attitude in the midst of change and an outlook for the future.\n\nThis survey was designed with the aim of comprehensively understanding the current state of young people, focusing on five areas that include not only on “work,” “marriage,” and “parental relationship” but also “household budget” and “social networks” as new areas for understanding with depth the
