In particular small- and medium-size manufacturers were hard hit by their parent companies\u0027 restructuring practices, engagement in overseas business, and cuts in unit prices--a phenomenon feared to help widen wage disparities. Against the backdrop, this research asks what factors have determined wage levels at smaller companies and to what extent the levels have been influenced by the wage hikes at large companies as well as by the kind of business relationships between the two types of companies including the unit price.
