This 1998 survey, the 34th of the kind, was carried out against the backdrop of a continuously unstable economic climate. The survey indicates that the students constantly worry about employment prospects as they witness seniors\u0027 severe job-seeking activities and face the abolishment of the \"shushoku kyotei\" custom, or the gentlemen\u0027s agreement to set a timetable for job-seeking students. The rising employment anxieties reach their peak not when they are senior but junior, the survey finds out. In addition, their current economic situation has deteriorated as the lives of their parents, from whom they receive financial support, were thrown into the environment where firms go bankrupt one after another and more and more people loose their job. The students, too, have been unable to increase their earnings from part-time work.
